[[VIDEOID:5dc27ea15b339aabd07ec96284055af2]] Recording video or audio with an iPhone or other smart device has become the norm. Why not take better video or snapchat audio? You already have a great built in camera, so now we just need better audio. Thats where the Rode VideoMic Me comes in.
It's a directional shotgun mic that is easy to use and set up. And it's passive, which means no batteries. While this may be a drawback for the more pro-user, the lack of battery or power may be better for the regular everyday user. With quality construction, it's built pretty tough - Mostly aluminum, with a bit of plastic on the back.
The Mic plugs in with a 3.5mm and is compatible with most smart devices that have the female end. There is even a passthrough connection in the back so you can listen after you record something. Heck, you can even use the Rode VideoMic Me for phone calls or FaceTime, if you want.
The kit is pretty decent and includes a dead cat and plastic clamping piece. All in all, a great device to capture better audio for Instagram, Snapchat or Facebook live, not to mention just recording memories on you device. I totally recommend this if you're in the market to increase the audio in your videos on a budget.

I couldn't decide on a microphone to capture audio with my GoPro Hero4. Is this overkill for an action camera - absolutely! But I decided to go with the old "buy nice or buy twice" on this one since I also plan on using the GoPro as an additional camera for vlogging so recording good voice audio was one of the purchase criteria. I initially wanted to budget no more than $100 for a good mic which had me deciding between the Rode VideoMicro and VideoMic GO as well as similar competitor models. I liked the fact that those two do not require battery power (versus the Pro requiring a 9V battery) and the simplicity of use (no power switch as the mic is powered by the camera once it's plugged into the 3.5mm jack or mini-USB adapter). But the fact that this microphone is highly regarded by so many videographers, I felt like it could serve me well on many other future platforms and not just on the GoPro. I listened to comparisons between the three Rode microphones and the Pro sounds noticeably less noisy. Voice audio recordings also sound more natural and less harsh on the ears even at high volumes.
Regardless of the platform, this product functions very well at capturing audio and is very well constructed although removal of the battery door for the first time can have you second guessing if you're opening it correctly!

Really wasn't expecting much when I ordered this mic. I knew it would be slightly better than the stock mic on the iPhone 6, but I will say I was pleasantly surprised at how much the sound improved when using this. Initially I needed it for a specific video I was making, but have since used it several times and it continues to impress.
The package that it came in is very nice. I've kept it as storage for when I'm not using the mic. Included is the mic, the wind cover, and the plastic stabilizer for the mic, as well as the instructions.
The best part about this is you really only need to plug it in and that's it! Once plugged in, the iPhone picks up its sound through the mic and you're good to go.
I did several A/B tests on the same subjects with and without the mic and the wind cover and I will say, you can DEFINITELY tell a huge difference when using the mic. Most of my work is done indoors, but the wind cover still helps with smoothing out peoples voices.
Pros:
Affordable
Compact
Works great
Nice packaging that doubles as storage
Very easy to use
Cons:
Wind cover is a bit bulky, but doesn't interfere with the shot
