This kit is extremely easy to use. Although there are 2 liquids and some crystals in the kit you really only need to mix the two liquids to make a solution which is then painted onto paper, cloth or other materials whilst in a dark or dimly lit room. Once dry, the treated material can be left out in the sun with the shape that you want to make into an image on top of the paper. We used leaves, flowers and shapes that I cut out of paper as a 'mask' (see images). It is best to cover the whole paper with a sheet of glass to keep it flat. This only works in sunlight, not lamps, and the timing of exposure is something you will have to experiment with.
To develop the print simply wash the paper in water for a few minutes.
One other suggestion: don't make up too much solution as it doesn't keep and it goes a long way. We painted various types of paper, from watercolor, drawing paper, regular writing paper, colored paper and brown wrapping paper. The results were very pleasing and we're looking forward to more experimenting.
This makes a great summertime hobby with the children too.

I have purchased this cyanotype kit as well as the "new" cyanotype kit, and I greatly prefer this one. You don't need much extra stuff, just a small graduated cylinder to measure the liquid (equal parts each), something to mix it in, and a foam craft brush to paint the liquid onto your paper. Excellent for anyone wanting to start working in alternative-process photography.

Great and easy to work with product. Make this very old process easy to do. No weighing or measuring chemicals. The Formulary is a really great company working hard to educate and make the historical photography processes do-able. If you want to learn and do Cyanotypes, this is the way to go. You just measure equal parts of the liquid from the A bottle with the B bottle. It could not be easier! This works on both paper and fabric.
