SCREEN

Compared to my old GPS, the screen on the 600 is beautiful. It is large and relatively high resolution. The only critique I have is that it can be too bright at night, even on the lowest setting. The "black" is more of a washed out grey. I understand that OLED is an expensive technology, but good black levels are a major factor in GPS displays.

MOUNT

Good mounts are included and more appropriate for use in a truck than the type included in car GPS units. The only thing better, and not so unreasonable for the price, would be one that is easy to pull in and out when switching vehicles.

NAVIGATION

The trucker has navigation that takes vehicle type and size into account, which is a major distinguishing feature. It generally works well and the display is nice. A longstanding issue with TomTom is that they have poor guesses at exact street addresses. Garmin is just better at knowing where on a street 965 would be. For whatever reason, TomTom has yet to address this.

Lane guidance is available in a basic fashion, but don't get your hopes up for the city streets where things are really tricky. For example, if I need to be in the middle lane because it will turn into the right lane before I need to take a right, the GPS won't mention it.

A big plus is that the signal strength is stronger than any GPS unit I've used. It gets signal where nothing else I own does.

INTERFACE

Using the multi-touch screen for typing addresses is easier than my old units and generally the menus are basic and intuitive. I was curious about voice commands, which I had had decent success with on my ancient Garmin and with my phone in Google navigation. Unfortunately, it is terrible and slow. For me, it is not worth bothering with until they fix it.

PHONE INTERACTION

Being able to plan my routes ahead of time on a phone is a big selling point. Unfortunately, this is another area that is not yet polished. The phone connects via Bluetooth, which requires me to make my phone visible in settings. Every time. This annoyance keeps me from wanting to use it at all. When connected, it gives the GPS information on traffic and speed traps, and syncs with any routes you have added on the app or web version on a PC.

My main desire for an app was to make custom routes ahead of time, similar to what I do in Google Maps. Unfortunately, the app does not yet do that. The only option is to set a start and end destination, and dragging on the screen does not make waypoints. Thankfully, the web version does have this feature. Perhaps it just hasn't been added to the app yet.

Also, since the app monopolizes the phone's Bluetooth, I can't use my traditional Bluetooth media and phone interactions with the vehicle sound system. If they use Bluetooth, all of this needs to be included in the GPS itself, and the GPS needs to be connected to the main sound system.

OVERALL

With a big, sharp screen and strong GPS signal, the Trucker 600 is a good GPS. But, there is still a lot of work to do to make it a great one.
