The EpsonXP-330 is what they call a "small in one"; a small footprint multifunction device. It's a printer, a copier, and a scanner. It can connect to a device with a USB cable or it can connect over a wifi network. It has a built-in card reader for SD memory cards, as are used in digital cameras.

The out of the box experience was good. It's easy to unpack and set up the XP-330; pull it out of the box, remove the foam packing brackets, get it out of the plastic bag, remove the colored tape strips and one piece of foam, plug it in, and it will walk you through the rest of the start-up. It comes with a power cord, 4 ink cartridges, basic instructions, and a CD ROM with software on it for installation on computers that will be using the printer - but it's also possible to download the needed software from the internet for devices lacking a CD drive. In the case of Apple iPhones and iPads, the printer works right out of the box with AirPrint, software already in the iOS.

If you're going to use the printer on a wifi network, it will seek it out once you've installed the ink cartridges and allowed it to prime, something that takes about 4-5 minutes. Installing the cartridges is easy - the top lifts open and the sockets are clearly marked for the 4 individual inks: black, yellow, cyan, and magenta. They can be replaced separately as needed. Once the printer was ready to go, it found the wifi network with no problems and connected after the network password was entered into it through the control panel on the front.

The controls are relatively straight forward. There's several clearly marked buttons, and an LCD display to show menu options that will walk you through whatever you're trying to do. I was able to print a picture from my iPhone right away with no trouble - the printer showed up in the list of available printers, and the photo came out looking great on plain paper. Copying it as a test come up with a print that appeared nearly identical in quality.

The only thing left to do is see how the printer holds up over time. So far it's done everything asked of it with satisfactory results. Because it can be used over a wifi network, it can be located anywhere that's convenient. It doesn't have to be tied down by cables - any other device on the wifi network should be able to use it. If you've got a number of devices in your house, this is a real convenience you'll quickly find indispensable. This isn't really meant to be an office workhorse, but as a home printer for casual use or for a student, it's a nice package.

Ink capacity is the other thing to consider. If you're going to be printing a lot of photos, you'll probably go through the cartridges pretty quickly (although they can be found in an XL size.) They can be bought separately or in combo packs. As it happens, I've also tried the next model up, the Epson Expression Home XP-430 Wireless Color Photo Printer with Scanner and Copier; it's nearly identical to the XP-330. The controls are quite similar. The difference in price isn't all that much, and the rest of the hardware seems pretty much the same. The main difference is that the LCD panel is larger; depending on your eyesight that might be the better option. Even with the larger screen though, previewing pictures on an SD card from my camera wasn't really all that useful. The menu options on both screens were still quite readable. If either of these printers are in your price range, you could probably be happy with either one.
