By Boxer Dog Lover in Vermont...
Living in a small log cabin, air flow has always been a problem in the sleeping area. In what I call the 'front room', I have a ceiling fan installed which takes care of that area. With the temperatures increasing in Vermont the past couple of summers, I debated buying a small a/c unit. Chalked that up to a waste of both electrical energy usage and money. Finally decided that for the little bit of cooling that I would get, it just wasn't practical.
So, the search began for a fan which I originally thought would be a small floor model. Found this one and the base extends vertically up to 48 inches which is exactly what I needed (but didn't realize it).
Pleasantly surprised with the ease of assembling this oscillating fan. I am visually impaired and did not want to call a neighbor for assistance. The instructions were both clear, concise and print was dark enough for me to read. Had this little fan assembled and 'humming' in no time at all.
Being a light sleeper, I also wanted one with little to no noise but with directional air flow. This one exceeded my expectations and one is also able to leave it in stationary if desired. The fan does have a choice of 3 speeds, also. Slow, medium and fast and the noise level does not increase with the higher speed.
So far, so good and of course, as soon as it arrived the night time temperature dipped down to the high 40's instead of the mid 70's. Not to worry as later this week it will come in handy with daytime temps near 90.
Will update if any problems occur.
Highly recommended.
Edited on 8 October - The nights are getting below freezing now so time to put the fan into the loft for the winter and ...GASP...get the little electric heater down for those really frigid nights. This fan continued to hum all summer long and did an excellent job in my log cabin. No problems whatsoever with it.

I live in a part of Los Angeles that gets very hot during the summer and it's consequently very expensive to cool off a two story house. This fan provides so much cool air that I actually had to back it out of the room a little because it was getting too cold. I bought a second one to put in the bedroom and it keeps it cool enough that no A/C is needed. I will probably ultimately buy one for every room in the house; the cost of buying 5 of these fans is still less than the power bill for one month of A/C. I'm sure there are better options out there but they also cost twice as much or more. There are a few reviews here that say the fan quit on them after a day or a month; if that happens to me I'll update the review. The people that said it was noisy either put it together wrong or don't realize that fans by nature make noise; there's no such thing as a silent propeller based fan.

We ended up liking the first 16" Lasko 2521 Oscillating Stand Fan we bought because it was inexpensive, very lightweight, extremely quiet, easy to clean, adjustable (both height and tilt), and reasonably powerful (considering). So when the second one we ordered failed to push out much air, we were seriously disappointed.
We wondered if we overestimated the original fan's performance, but no, it still worked great. Being curious (and stubborn) old coots, we took the new fan apart just to see what we could find. Nothing seemed out of order, but once the fan was reassembled, it became much more powerful - just like the first one!
Since then we have discovered that on this second fan, the plastic parts that screw down to hold the pieces together tend to drift loose - and very quickly. Every week or two, we have to take the thing apart (which is easy enough) and tighten the same two screw-on parts (one behind the blades, one in front). We have never tested to see if tightening only one part would do the job. We just do them both, and afterwards, the fan perks right up. We've never had to do this on the first fan we purchased.
That first fan, also from Amazon, was in retail packaging (a blue two-piece box with product images and description). The second one was in "frustration free packaging" (a plain corrugated cardboard box with the pieces wrapped in plastic). Whether this has anything to do with the problem, we can't know.
We wanted to let people know, understanding that buyers might be tempted to give up and toss the thing if it acts like our second one does and they don't know how to fix the problem.
