Setup is easy. The guide booklet shows how to set up for Mobile app, Web, Desktop, and Cloud Access. Each requires only 5-7 steps. On mobile it is as easy as installing the Amcrest app, scanning the cameras QR code, and changing the password. After that I installed the "IP Config" software and browser plugin on PC and simply logged in with my password and had access to live view, playback, and settings. It also works with other software like Blue Iris, and android apps like IP Cam Viewer, and tinyCam Monitor. Just requires inputting the cameras IP, name, password.
In the desktop software/browser plug-in, there are TONS of settings and functionality. Multiple profiles for day and night, recording times and schedules, motion and or audio detection recording, email alerts. Camera settings like brightness, contrast, shutter speed, IR sensitivity, WDR, noise reduction, etc. Video quality adjustments like VGA, 720p, 1080P, 1-30fps, birates of 55-8100Kbps. As well as a VGA substream with it's own quality settings. Other things like snapshot intervals, privacy masking, date/time and or custom text overlays can be added or removed. Even with all them, the defaults are just fine if you aren't tech savy.
Network options are almost unlimited. Many configurations for: TCP/IPv4/IPv6, P2P, Connection ports, PPPoE, DDNS, IP Filtering, SMTP Email, UPnP, SNMP, Bonjour, Multicast, WIFI, 802.1x, and QoS.
▌ SOFTWARE
MOBILE APP
The mobile apps has Live view, Playback, and Device manager. Live view allows for viewing up to 16 cameras simultaneously, or one at full screen. It has controls for the loud speaker, or enabling the microphone to hear things in the room. There are also pan, tilt, zoom, focus, and iris controls. Video can be flipped and mirrored for different mounting positions. Screenshots and video recording can be initiated manually.
Just one problem, there is a 10-50 second delay making it almost unusable with the default settings (1080p, 30fps, 4096Kps). To solve this, I have to only use the substream which needs to be configured to 480p <5fps, <256kps bitrate to get the lag down to 1 second. Recording playback is almost unusable on the app because it hardly loads such large bandwidth recordings. To bad since realtime monitoring and remote playback is the main purpose. My internet speeds on my phone are 7MB/s U/D, but my bandwidth monitor is showing amcrests app only using 300-600Kps for liveview and playback no matter what bitrate I have it set to.
DESKTOP/BROWSER PLUGIN
LIVE VIEW
Live view has all the functions that the mobile app has like PTZ, screenshot, record, mic, speaker, etc. As well as a main stream and sub stream, image adjustments, etc. It's really easy to use and responsive. No lag like the mobile app.
PLAYBACK
Playback gives access to the recorded footage. There is a calendar for selecting the date and time, as well as a file list. When a file is played, there is a timeline on the bottom of the screen with the normal play/stop/slow/fast video player controls. Files can be cut and saved to the PC from this interface. It works good unlike the mobile playback.
▌ CONCLUSION
PROS:
- Good video quality and low light performance.
- Tons of settings and customizations in the software while retaining good defaults for the non tech savy.
- Easy to navigate live view and playback.
CONS:
- Very delayed live view on mobile unless you only view it at low resolution and britrate. Watching in HD can have a delay as much as 50 seconds, making it almost useless for controlling. Playback is also useless. Seems like it's their servers, as I'm only gettin 300-600kps streaming.
- Doesn't look down far enough. Camera needs to be low or at eye level, if it's up high it's should be mounted upside down or it can't look at the floor.
This camera works very well, and the desktop software is excellent, but the mobile app needs improvements. I'll contact support and update, other than that I would recommend it.
