Customer Reviews
Most helpful customer reviewsHardware: Upgrading from a SD system, the video quality is amazing (viewed directly on the DVR)! The backwards compatibility with SD cameras is also nice, letting me use cameras from my old system along with the 10 HD ones included. Viewing SD and HD cameras at the same time really makes it clear how much resolution the HD ones offer. Even in "night vision" mode, the video quality of the included cameras is very nice. I was able to upgrade the unit to a 4TB harddrive - I used a WD Purple 4TB Surveillance Hard Disk Drive - 5400 RPM Class SATA 6 Gb/s 64MB Cache 3.5 Inch - WD40PURX and it worked perfectly - just "plug and play" - no need to change any settings or format it or anything.
Software: Beware! This DVR requires "Silverlight" if you view the web page, which is no longer supported with Google Chrome or Microsoft "Edge" on Windows 10! So you CANNOT USE the web interface unless you use Internet Explorer, or Firefox. That's terrible on a new product - what were you thinking, Samsung ?! It's 2016 I should be able to type on the interface and use the product in it's full capacity on any modern browser! The DVR comes with the software "smartviewer" - but they included it on a CDROM. I haven't owned a computer with one of those in 5 years. There are several versions of this software floating around online, and the one on Samsung's website (v3.0) isn't compatible with this version of the DVR. Of course. Finally I was able to find V4.5 at the Samsung affiliated company [...] and it seems to work with the DVR. However, the interface is terrible, and the video quality is EVEN WORSE!! The highest resolution you can "stream" at is 4CIF, which is 704×480 pixels - nowhere close to HD. So if you want to watch your HD cameras in real time, you better plan on being close to the DVR! I can stream 1080p halfway across the country watching Amazon Video or Netflix, but I can't stream 1080p halfway across my house over a 1gbps network with this DVR. WTF, Samsung ?!
This system will work for my purposes. For the price, I can "put up" with it's shortcomings. However, I worked with DVRs 10 years ago that had the same bugs, the same limitations, the same glitchy software. I expect more from a company like Samsung in 2016.
